Yeah they really screwed the pooch on their model lineup. Currently it is :
Boxster S/Cayman S : 295 hp (upcoming 07' Boxster S)
911 Carrera : 325 hp
911 Carrera S : 355 hp
911 Carrera S (w/ upcoming powerkit) : 380 hp
Should have been :
Boxster S : 295 hp
Cayman S : 325 hp
911 Carrera : 355 hp
911 Carrera S : 380 hp
Would have made much more sense given where the market is/going. A Cayman with a 3.6L 325 hp would make much more sense. And the Carrera if it had the 3.8L 355 hp would have been competitive with the base Corvette (vs. right now you have to go to the Carrera S to compete).

A Cayman with 325hp from the factory would have been interesting......of course it would have given it as base price of $75,000 instead of $60,000.
Porsche is having their best sales/profit years right now, so everything they've done lately is working for them.

with all due respect, i dont get it when people ask how can you compare cars. a car is a car. you can compare a scion xa to ferrari f430.
was the cayman more fun to drive than your S?

One point is most people want to look like racers than actually want to buy race cars. The Elise is a case in point. It's about the same price as cars like C6, Boxster and Cayman. Yet only a few units (less than 3000/year) will be moved.
People like raw performance but they like (or buy) livability more.
I think a car like the Cayman (240hp 3000 lbs) is a nice 'real world car' with acceptable performance. Many people won't drive a Vette any faster than they will drive a Cayman (on real world roads).
MY co-worker sold his 911 turbo. He drove it the same 10-20 mph over the speed limit that we drive our S2000s. In that regards many cars are over-kill. Not bad, but for public roads having huge performance cars is like hunting dear with an Elaphant gun. You can do it, but it's not necessary.

If we all bought into the "necessary" idea, then we'd all drive Hyundai Accents with no power windows or door locks.
