cayman s vs s2000
Two totally different leagues, and two totally different regions. I've always believed that there are three types of cars: Asian, European, and American. It is tough to compare vehicles outside of a perspective region.
I like to think that the Base Cayman is more along the lines of the S2000 - they're very similar in power. Handling wise, they're both cars that have the ability to amaze someone (when driven properly), and with that they're both potentially dangerous when they are driven beyond one's abilities. I have yet to drive the Cayman on the Dragon, but I plan to in September - that will be a better test of how it compares to the S2000 than the driving I've done around town. I expect that I will be able to drive the Cayman on the Dragon faster than I could drive my old S2000. I suspect it will handle the Dragon like a NSX does.
Sorry I can't be more specific, but I just don't know how to answer that question.

biggest problem for me is not so much the price of the Cayman S (still a good bit less than the 911).
having my S2000 (paid and clear), (only worth say $19K), to trade up to the Cayman S at $62K, the difference between my S2000 and a Cayman S ($43K) can get a 335i or IS350 (for example) for the difference.
I'd sooner get a 335i (for example) to go with the S2000.
Edit: still like my S2000 after almost 4 years. may trade it in some day, but there is no rush. The Cayman is only going to get better as years go by (IMO).

About the Cayman/Cayman S. Price/Performance and the Boxster/Cayman price gap.
The way I see it, right now the Cayman is new and different so it will sell OK for a while.
When/if the Cayman/Boxster sales numbers sort themselves out it's possible for the Cayman to sell for less or have more equipment to make up the difference.
The fact that a Z06 is 2x as powerful as a CS at the same weight and same price may be addressed. It's possible for a larger more powerful engine to migrate to the Cayman from the 911 as they move up-power.
Both the Boxster and the Boxster S have gained 45hp over the last 5-6 years

The official worldwide sales number was projected at 10,000; however according to the Porsche CEO last December, "We have some more ideas for the Cayman. That means more products. So in the future there could be more volume."
