Porsche was in F1 years ago. Im too lazy to get exact dates but here is a 1961 Porsche F1 car. I am almost certain they won a constructors(engine) title in the past

The reason Porsche is not involved now is for several reasons
COST
VW. Because they are the Marque Figure head, has decided if the company enters modern F1 they will enter as VW.

Especially since they sell so many fewer vehicles than say MB, or BMW....(though one wonders how jag can afford it when they as a company are loosing hundreds of millions of $).

As for the original question, Porsche had two recent campaigns in F1 as a engine builder. In the mid-80s turbocharged TAG Porsche were the motors to have and with them McLaren won the championship for Keke Roseberg 1984 and then again with Alain Prost in 1985. New fuel consumption regulations and the emergence of Honda as a dominant force ended the TAG Porsche term and they backed out of the sport.
Porsche returned in the early 90s with a NA v-12 that despite being highly touted, turned out to be a complete disaster, and by mid season they pulled out and went back to the drawing board. I don't think they ever made it back either.
I agree cost is probably what is preventing Porsche from trying F1 again, although sponsorship does cover most of the bills. What Porsche really needs to do is get their sports car effort back on track and put an end to the Audi R8's ridiculous domination. Talk about boring, that car has won ever major race it has entered (except Le Mans 03, Audi R8 powered Bentley).
Sports car racing is what has made Porsche what they are, and the street cars are merely a byproduct of that. Now the we have made our little truck and the C-GT is on the street, can we please get back to Le Mans?

At this point F1 is so out of touch with reality I doubt it helps sell many cars.
I'd rather Porsche stay out of F1 and stay in racing series that I enjoy watching. I watch F1 about as much as I watch NASCAR these days, which is to say never. F1 has become sterile and boring because of technology and money while NASCAR will always be boring as a result of driving around in circles.
