If you'd rather drive a base 997 than a 996 Turbo... then what does that say about a 996 Turbo without the turbo....
The 996s never did it for me. In assuredly limited testing, I drove a C4, C4S, C2S and C2... and they all felt a little ordinary in their driving dynamics to me. No adrenaline or lust. And the interiors by modern standards are pretty horrid.
The Cayman S, current gen Boxster S, and 997 911s...
Oh yes... she will be mine.....

Particularly when referring to an EVO. It's just a different class of a car--not to knock the EVO.

I had a 01 996 C4 (non S!) for about a year. I sold it months ago, I have missed the hell out of it since then.
Only things I had to change was the ignition switch (cheap $30, easy diy) that caused some strange electrical quirks until I replaced it.
Otherwise it ran awesome, no strange leaks/oil burning/fumes. The a/c got icy cold, and the heater would make you sweat in the winter.
Maintenance can be pricy, and if something major breaks that you can't fix yourself - have lots of money ready to fix it.
Another note: The n/a 996's are not very moddable, any exhausts/intakes really do nothing for the car except sound.

Ahah. Ahahahaha. LMAO.
Edmunds True Cost to Own
2004 996 C4S
True Cost to Own $65,615 (5 years)
Total Cash Price $36,726
Average Cost per Mile* $0.87
2009 S2000 CR (@MSRP LOL)
True Cost to Own $51,731 (5 years)
Total Cash Price $37,725
Average Cost per Mile* $0.69
$14,000 - $19,000 difference over 5 years. Thats, again, a 2009 CR at MSRP. Of course in 'real life' it would be closer to 31-32OTD.

After 6 years of S2000 ownership and 2+ years of Cayman ownership, I didn't experience a great differential in maintenance costs - certainly immaterial enough to not make that a factor in which one to choose.
The expensive maintenance stereotype is pretty much a myth for most modern Porsches that are street-driven. They are a lot more expensive to track, if you increase your oil change frequency as I would under such usage.

Reread what he wrote before getting all condescending:
Of course a more expensive car will depreciate more -- no one's denying that. He said that maintenance won't be much more on a Cayman, and according to your own source, he's right:
5 year cost to maintain a 2006 S2000: $5710
http://www.edmunds.com/used/2006/honda/s20...652271/cto.html
5 year cost to maintain a 2006 Cayman S: $7861
http://www.edmunds.com/used/2006/porsche/c...634486/cto.html
That's a difference of a bit over $400 a year, or as Jay-V wrote, not much more in the grand scheme of things.

Wow, I'm a interior whore by all means, but completely disagree with your statement. I loved my 996 interior.
