The 3.0T won't fit, according to Porsche.
Damn it!
Don't be so sure. TPC had no problem fitting a turbo on the 3.4 H6's. I realize an OEM has different packaging standards, but still seems like a flimsy excuse. Of course it's worth noting that the new 3.0 engine in the 911 has two turbos. So I can believe that wouldn't fit in the 981. But I'm sure the 3.0 liter engine with just one turbo would.

On the turboed Boxsters that are coming out, will they have an air/air intercooler? It's my understanding that the supposed reason they couldn't turbo the older Boxsters/Caymans was because the rear strut suspension took up space in the rear quarter panels that the intercoolers would occupy, a la 911.

But I agree with deepbluejh that it's less of an engineering challenge and more of a marketing decision.

Yes, they will have an air/air intercooler. It's fed by the air intake on the passenger side of the car, behind the door.

Well it wouldn't be a drop in upgrade, but with some engineering they could make it fit.

They also told us a turbocharged Boxster/Cayman platform couldn't happen because there wasn't enough airflow to cool the turbos... yet here we are today.

The real reason for keeping the 6 cylinder to the 911 is greater product differentiation between "big brother" and "little brother".
You do realize they cut off two cylinders, which gives them extra room, right?

It's not like they turbo'd the old flat 6. They turbo'd a new, more compact engine.

Agreed on all points.

It's probably true that they can't drop in the 911 engine, as is, but it's also probably not true that they couldn't adapt its configuration to fit. It's a "narrow" truth...

Yep. Totally agree. If you want a H6 Porsche, get the 911. If you want NA H6 Porsche, get the 911 GT cars. If you just want an H6, Subaru is still selling Legacy with their 3.6...

981.2 Boxster configurator is online now:
http://www.porsche.com/usa/modelstar...modelrange=718

Base price is $3400 over 981.1 Cayman's, which is a pretty significant increase. I know Porsche is swapping the position in its line-up between Boxster and Cayman. I'm curious to see how much lower the 981.2 Cayman would be compared to the Boxster.

It's just screwing the consumer yet again. Instead of swapping prices, they leapfrogged the old price. No way the new Cayman is cheaper than the old one!

It seems like the car magazines are going soft on Porsche, and intentionally understating the impact this engine change will have on the car's driving experience.

Car and Driver just completed a long term test of a 2014 Cayman S and they absolutely fell in love with the car, specifically the engine. Here are of few of the things they had to say:

"So integral to the appeal of the Cayman is its delicious exhaust and intake noise that the thought of it going silent - of not getting to experience it again in this particular car or in any future Cayman - was genuinely saddening"

"That engine noise was the reason that, when we had optioned our long-termer 15 months before, we chose the $2825 sport exhaust option to amplify the aural pleasure."

Under Rants & Raves:

"I need more flat-six noise in my life"

"The Cayman's engine sound surely plays over the loudspeakers in heaven. At least, my heaven."

And my personal favorite, unrelated to sound: "People may think this is a starter Porsche, but they are asshats. This is the real McCoy."

Also looks like C&D's Cayman was a particularly fast example. 0-60 in 4.2 seconds. Not too shabby for the 6sp manual.

I obviously love the flat six and my GT4 sounds amazing, but the videos that I've heard of the 718 Boxster S, it really sounds pretty good, especially for a turbo flat 4. It has some pops and crackles and I know that torque will feel nice.

I was just asked if I wanted on the 718 GT4 wait list at my dealer and I said yes. I don't know what it will be like, but it'll probably be awesome and will quite possibly still have an NA flat six on that model. TBD.
