Porsche 718 Boxster & Boxster S Switch to Turbo 4s
#61
I am one who does not like the flat four idea, but I know why they have to do it. But it seems like on the configurator there has been a decent hop in the base price. $56k for the BASE Boxster is getting pretty steep, even if the turbo were mod friendly, which Porsche seriously frowns upon.
Still, since base Boxsters depreciate much faster on the used market, and now have 300hp, they might be a decent bargain a few years from now even if they are not super fast.
I'd love to ED a new Cayman, does not look like it will happen anytime soon. Too many house needs. Was headed to Hawaii two weeks ago, ten below outside and I wake up at 3am with the temp 56 degrees in my house and the air conditioner running. Computer thermostat went haywire. The cost for an emergency visit at 4am a few hours before my flight? $1,800. To figure out it was the thermostat. He says, "You really should get a new furnace and air conditioner, these are 20 years old." The wife agrees.
She never agrees that a Porsche is a priority.

The SOUND most of all. It is a big part of the Porsche experience hearing the pops and burble. Intoxicating.
Second, smoothness and linear power delivery.
I don't mind the power increasing, but fours generally sound like crap and feel pretty rough. Even good ones.

Why is everyone getting up in arms about flat-4s in Porsches?

Yeah, that crossed my mind as well. Porsche will just tell you to buy a 911 if you want an H6 and sound. Perhaps THAT is the ulterior motive behind the move to H4s in Boxster/Cayman.

The new 911's don't sound terrible, but since they are all now turbo as well, which is driven by exhaust gas, it muffles the goodness quite a bit. But change comes whether we like it or not.

I watched the 718 Boxster video, and there is a sequence that shows the variable vane turbo. It is cool tech, but I remember it being used in a 1989 Dodge Shelby Daytona way back in the day. The turbos were not that reliable and the car made a whopping 175 hp if I remember correctly, but the concept has been around for a while. I worked as a lot boy at the dealer and remember when that was considered a fairly fast car.

And lol @ one does not simply chip a modern Porsche. Truer words have never been spoken.

Well it wouldn't be a drop in upgrade, but with some engineering they could make it fit.
They also told us a turbocharged Boxster/Cayman platform couldn't happen because there wasn't enough airflow to cool the turbos... yet here we are today.
The real reason for keeping the 6 cylinder to the 911 is greater product differentiation between "big brother" and "little brother".
