Please help me diagnose Mazda 3 sound
My "other car" is a 2008 Mazda 3 Hatch 2.3L non-turbo 90k miles
The sound...
- A rapid, deep, clicking/bumping sound. Frequency is speed dependent coming from near the LF wheel. (almost sounds like running over closely spaced road joints or a series of small bumps)
- continues when in neutral and when the engine is off (when moving)
- continues at all speeds and when turning or driving straight
- has gotten progressively worse over the last 100 miles
- Goes away when torque is applied to the drive wheels via 2/10+ acceleration and any braking (but is worst during 0/10-1/10 acceleration)
- at slow speeds with the windows down there is a grinding sound that occurs with each rotation of the wheel at the same point of rotation.
Please help me out. I think it is a CV joint, but I would like input from those with more mechanical experience before I start buying parts and taking it apart.
Thanks!
