How's this work?

So not manufacturing? Are not the dealerships, since they're independently owned? If GM stops actually making the cars, is Penske SOL? I don't understand what exactly he's purchased, and how he'll make it work.
It said he will buy cars from GM and Renault and badge them as Saturn's. I see that as pretty much what GM does as a whole right now, but GM will no longer have to front the bill for it.

I think it's a little strange to buy a brand and everything associated with it, but to have no manufacturing process to actually provide you with your own product is rather stupid (IMO).

Not having manufacturing tied to what you're selling works since you can contract to buy product from various sources. If GM builds a crap car, Saturn doesn't have to buy it and sell it - its free to buy the product it wants from various suppliers. Its an interesting model that would increase competition and thus quality if it works, since the dealer network would be free to buy the best stuff that will sell.

personally, I think it makes alot more sense for Magna to buy Saturn. It was my understanding that the initial agreement was Magna would buy both Opel and Saturn, allowing them to continue manufacturing Opels, rebadging them for Saturn and selling them thru the network here.
