A similar, but IMO much better story was on Discovery HD's "Chasing Classics" recently, called "Herb's Ferrari."
Herb Chambers re-buys a Ferrari Daytona Spider that he'd owned 30 years prior. A guy calls up Wayne Carini (who's the subject of the series), and says he's just found a Daytona Spider that's been in storage in the desert for 30 years. Carini looks at it, realizes that it had front right fender accident damage, and also remembers that Chambers owned one and was in an accident in it where it took that kind of hit. He looks up the chassis numbers, and it's the same car.
Turns out the car has incredible meaning to Chambers as the accident was near-fatal and insurance had sold the car off, seemingly totaled or otherwise gone forever. Upon rediscovering his old car, Chambers buys it (~$1MM), and Carini restores it for him.
