JonBoy, congrats on your upcoming kids, but just try fitting a rear facing child seat in a 911!
Otherwise, an M3 sedan would probably be the best comprimise for me. An M6 might work but I don't particularly like its looks nor do I trust its longevity (same goes for the M5).

3. You HAVE to perform all regular maintenance and upkeep WITH YOUR OWN MONEY
sign me up for a 911 turbo cabrio i guess. if i put the money i'm currently spending on my car payment into a savings account purely for 911 related expenses i could probably swing it

I guess I am alone in thinking that you would need to pay attention to rule #1 a little more.
I have not decided quite yet but I have narrowed it down to:
1. RS4 Cab
2. RS5
3. M3 Cab
For me the next 5 years will include kids so 911's are out with no back seat.

Only car, eh? That means convertible, and not an exotic. I'm thinking one of the following:
-Boxster S (I heard with the DI, it will be 325hp)
-XKR Cab
-SL63 AMG
If I wasn't such a convertible loving homo (or I could keep the S2000,) I'd get a loaded 911S X51, but I hate the 911 in a convertible.
If I sell the S2000 I could easily afford the maintenance on any of the above, and with a set of snow tires they wouldn't be any worse than the S2000 in the Chicago winters.
