Now who is getting an elise? - $41k plus tax (min).
So a loaded Elise will cost ~$45k (sports package and hardtop).
WHAT A BARGAIN.
I think Lotus has f'd this one up. I will wait for the $33k elise to arrive.
39985 Base Price
795 Delivery Cost
----------------------
40,780.00 plus tax
Options -
590 Metalic Paint
1200 Lifestyle Paint
2480 Sports Package
1475 Hardtop
1350 Touring Package (full leather seats, electric windows)

I don't see a problem -- it's a one-of-a-kind car, so they can pretty much ask whatever they want for it. Many cars for that price will out-accelerate the Elise in a straight line, but I can't think of another car in the $40k range, except for perhaps the C6 Corvette, which can match it in all-around performance.
To put it a different way, is the Elise worth $8k more than the S2000? To the hardcore enthusiasts (some would call them the masochists), the answer's surely yes.

new S2000's are $31k with no real shopping...... so that is $10k (plus the tax on the additional $10k) (so we'll call it $11k instead of $8k)...plus the level of comfort in the Elise is almost non existant compared to the already spartan S2000.
Time will tell, but I think this car for $41k is just too little and too harsh for the typical buyer. I predict the wait lists will drop very quickly..........

Does anybody else find is strange that on a car that pretty much serves no purpose other than being an exciting, visceral sports car, there's an optional "Sports Package"? I can't find any info on what it actually consists of, though. Just how non-"Sports" does this imply the base model is?

The sports package is just under $2500 and consists of lighter weight wheels (wider in the front than stock), wider & stickier tires, different shocks and springs, and an adjustable swaybar. It's basically a track package. The base car is by no means cushy in the suspension department. The sports package just cranks it up a notch.
