No more Suzuki automobiles in the US of A.

I've been waiting for this same headline for Mitsubishi for years. They sell 4 models these days, Lancer, Gallant, Outlander, and some weird little electric thing. The only thing they sell that is at all compelling in any segment is the EVO. The Gallant can't compete in the midsize sedan wars. The Outlander is on nobody's shopping list for a mid-size SUV. And the base Lancer is now outclassed by Chevy and Ford in addition to Nissan, Toyota, and Honda. Plus, the Koreans have floated above it with both Kia and Hyundai turning out better product.
Mitsubishi is yet another piece of industry consolidation waiting to happen.

Suzuki tried to sell small cars in a market that never wanted small cars. Even today small cars don't really sell well despite higher gas prices. The Kizashi was the biggest car it ever tried to sell and it was the most likely to do well, it is just another case of too little, too late.
Mitsubishi is also a small company but it at least makes cars that are American-market appropriate. Its biggest problem is that it is trying to be like Toyota and Honda vs setting itself apart like Subaru and Mazda do, and its going toward smaller and electric cars, which in the US is a waste of time. Killing the Evo and making the Eclipse a fwd econo-coupe were bad decisions imo. Trying to chase volume sales vs being boutique will eventually kill Mitsu, just like it killed Saab.

Mitsu Heavy Industries (part of the Mitsu group) is an enormous company, I doubt they will have any problems staying afloat. The North American passenger car market is barely a blip on their overall radar. Perhaps if GM also built rockets and freight ships, they would not have needed help either.

edit:
that being said, that doesn't mean their car line is any good, it just means they didn't care. Now they are paying for it by appointing a new NA chairman to turn things around. I'd love to see a new Eclipse that revives the old 1g/2g spirit.

Suzuki is a huge company and a leader in other markets worldwide where its product is a better match to the market - its NA Automobile division is all that folded. Its not how big they are back home but how big they are here and how well they are matching supply with demand that determines if they'll be able to stick around. USA was for years the largest and most profitable market, which is why they tried to sell cars here in the first place. They just never caught on that not all cars are equal and what they offered was not what people wanted. Mitsi Auto NA is doing the same thing imo.
