It's not news that the Taurus is going away. They kept it for a while after the introduction of the 500 because the rental fleets were still buying them.
Your buddy bought a new Taurus for $12k and he doesn't like it. What he got with the Taurus was a boring car with marginal power that will get you and four of your friends from point A to point B with little drama and some level of reliability, with a warranty. Not sure how much more you should expect for $12k.
Now he wants to spend what, $35k on a new 3 series, and he expects to like it. For a difference of $23k, I'd certainly expect more content/fun.
