No idea why people consider a Cayman over a 911

No, it's not "just as prone". It has a lower failure rate. That's why you see more failures with "especially the early cars (2005s)".

I think it's much more likely that you see more on 2005s because they are older and typically have more miles, not because they're somehow lesser built. Without data, neither of us can be conclusive, but that problem has been around a LONG time and changing the bearing size in a place with limited physical space to upsize the bearing is hardly going to allow for a true fix.

exactly. Porsche drivers are known to have much less miles on their cars. Who knows how many pre-09 997s will have IMS issues.

are you seriously comparing Subaru to a Porsche? why don't I compare Scion FRS to Ferrari F12. Oh wait, FRS is much better as it has lower center of gravity, flat 4 boxer, and 2 extra seats!

and as a matter of fact, S2000 does not have a WOW steering feel.
Some of the guys I know have Subaru turbos and all of them say with a few modifications that their mighty Subies can outrun Porsches for cheap . So in their eyes the Suby is better never even experiencing what a Porsche is all about .
Total 911 issue 60 page 54 - 997 reliability - Of the owners they contacted none had had an IMS failure. They also went on to say that the 3.4 motor of 996 was the one that had the most IMS issues and the IMS retaining bolt from 2006 on was 22 mm which was twice the size as the earlier cars . Some had the RMS leak and a few other small issues but the article pretty much stated the 997 was reliable with very few complaints.
Last it is the 911 that has the "WOW" steering feel!

A co-worker bought a 996 for cheap and had the engine "fixed" of the RMS and IMS issues before it went. Wasn't much to do the work, like 4K CHF for the whole job.

I've been quoted $2000-$2400 to replace the IMS bearing with ceramic. Thinking about getting a '99 911 w/ 47k on the clock and doing this now and as preventive every 50k miles (the generally accepted interval). Seriously thinking about it....

The OP drove a previous generation Cayman, which is slower, looser, and of lower quality all around than the new Cayman. I also drove 986 Cayman and went away only moderately impressed. However about two months later I drove the latest generation 981 Cayman S and was so blown away it that I decided to buy one. It was a different league of car.

For reference, I also drove a 2012 911 S and while it was faster, it also felt much larger, heavier, and tail heavy. No thanks. I don't think I would have gotten the 911 S even if it was the same price as the Cayman S. Maybe I just needed more seat time in the thing, but the Cayman felt like the more pleasant drive for me.

Man you guys make me want to test drive a Cayman. Is it worth selling my MR2's for? :roll eyes:

I tried to locate an available GT4 allocation, but clearly waited far too long. I think a regular Cayman would be a better fit for me anyway, but I would kill to drive them all.
