Nice cars and co-worker jealousy

Southern Cal is an anomoly, but I wonder how many of those people over 23 years old can afford a home? Not very many, so since they've accepted the fact they won't own a home in Southern Cal until they're at least 40, then go blow their money on an apartment and monthly car payment.
Also don't forget that SoCal is big on IMAGE. There are lots of wealthy people there but there are also a lot of people that pretend to be wealthy. The simple fact is that most overspend and overextend to have nicer cars and bigger homes.

I think it's probably significantly different in chicago than it is in Southern California. There's hardly anyone over 23 that can't afford a 30k car here. There are just as many BMWs on the road as there are hondas. I see at least one exotic a day. I suppose I never had the mentality of the S2000 as a status symbol as a result of that.

No, I think you mean hardly anyone who can't BUY a $30k car there. What you can afford and what you can buy in this age of easy credit is vastly different. JonBoy is right, image is everything there. I had a cousin who was a bank manager in LA, and he mentioned he had a number of married employees, who lived with their parents but still drove a Benz or BMW. They either lived at home to afford the fancy car, or they couldn't afford to move out but since they lived at home they could afford a fancy car.
What I don't understand is why you guys would defend an 18 year old kid and pat him on the back when he's doing the very same thing with an S2000. At 18 in an S2k, it's about image. Unless you inherited money, there are far, far more fiscally responsible things to spend money on.

At any rate, why is an 18y/o driving an S2000 for an image, but an XXy/o not? When I was 18, I could still appreciate driving a nice sports car, not because I was showing off but because I LIKED it (even though it was academic, since I didn't HAVE a nice sports car...)

This is funny because i happened to catch a couple seconds of 'sweet 16' on mtv. In that couple of seconds i heard the words "my party cost $800,000."
whaaaaaaaaat.
I'm sorry but if i was the girl i'd say Dad, buy me a modest home (200-400k), 300k in stock/mf/whatever, and a cool car < 50k. That still leaves plenty of spending money.
There are countless better ways to spend this money but having a one time party like this is a waste.

Well I hate to bag on anyone, but for example, the guy that works at the pep boys parts counter. He made fun of his district manager for driving a carolla. If you work as a clerk at pep boys, you're either 18-20 or you really messed up somewhere in life. Either way, it's a terrible financial decision. Now someone can do anything one wants with his/her money, but to make fun of another person for driving a carolla that makes 4x more money than you is pretty ridiculous.
Though, I was younger once and had a paid-off '93 Del Sol with less than 50k miles and I bought a new '97 Honda Prelude. Paid that off, and it had less than 40k miles and I sold it for a new '01 C5. Paid that off, and then promptly sold it.
You know, it wasn't the smartest financial decisions I've ever made, but damn I did have fun and met a lot of great people because of my car enthusiast tendencies.
