Honestly if you think about it the 370z is like a current day e46 m3, which is sort of cool I guess.

^That's the biggest problem for the Z. Mustangs and Camaros have historically always sucked to some extent. Remember when Mustang GTs made 240 hp for a long time? But since 400 hp is the new 300 hp, V6 powered cars just don't cut it in that segment. Not to mention the fact that Mustangs keep getting better and better handling.
If the s2000 came out right now, you'd still be able to justify buying it on the grounds that it is really in a class all its own. It has certain cache that Z cars and Mustangs don't have, even though either could likely hand an s2000 its butt. But the Z car doesn't have that currently. It's just as heavy as the Mustang (give or take) and kind of a good handler, only with less power than the Mustang and with none of the cache of an s2000 or even a BRZ.
The current Mustang says, "Sure, this is an old recipe but we've really refined it. By the way, here's a zillion horsepower up your butt."
The BRZ says, "Yeah, this thing is kind of under-powered, but we worked our asses off to make everything else as good as possible."
The 370z says, "Well, we already had this FR platform laying around and we're knee deep in V6s, so here you go. Sorry."

I recall in the mid-70's we 510 owners got a kick out of watching the "ponderous" Z's trying to auto-x. Now, I think of them as rather svelte. Times change.

I would like to add though even with the 370 v6 it still is pretty fast. The new mustang runs 12s bone stock, the 370z will get really close to 12s bone stock. IMO it's still hanging in with the best. They did make it significantly faster then the previous 350z.
