Datsun 510!! Ok, not a muscle car, but still cool and could be made to be mighty quick.
I love the 69 camaro particularly because of the fender lines.
For american, nothing beats a restored 63 vette split window.

Everybody and his brother has a big, stupid, Chevy muscle car. The Datsun 510 would be a MUCH more interesting project, not to mention it would get better than single digit MPG.
The only domestic thing I'd consider would be a 70's vette.

There is a reason why.
Parts are easy to obtain for most and they are easy to work on. Plus they remind people of their youth and after you restore one they are worth something.
Finding a Datsun in any kind of restorable condition in itself is nearly impossible. You could stand next to one when they were new and hear the rust chewing away at it. Parts would be either impossible to find or extremely expensive. And then when you get er done, what have you got? A car you may enjoy the hell out of but which would in all likelyhood have little or no value. Certainly not what you have invested into it...
There are reasons why you don't ofted see a Japanese car running through the auction blocks.

I think I posted this one before, a pic I took of a '69 Camaro a co-worker hot-rodded.
This is a bad boy. I like the shaved doors, race interior, and a 383 stroker under the hood that is fully chromed with the usual aircraft fittings and braided lines (Demon carb IIRC, series 40 exhaust, VERY lumpy cam). It sounded better than my Z06 with cut-outs. That paint job is show-quality. I helped him trailer it to the sand blaster. They fixed every centimeter of rust and from there it was an interesting negotiation over how many times to let the body shop do sand & primer cycles. I think it ended up being four times (!) and it could have gone to six.
After working on it for literally years he is not really finished. The rear end is still an open diff and he can lay a one-tire stripe for about 200 feet! I believe he's thinking of a large Ford posi swap.
I keep nagging him to compete at car shows but he's sort of private about it. I think he has penis envy over the bigger blown motors, with the blowers that block your vision. Yeah, he's mulling over that possibility...
