There's a lot of wicked technical features in the new E that are really cool, the one I drove had the new cruise control that slows and speeds up by itself and even comes to a full stop if the car in front of you stops, it will even do an emergency stop if necessary.
woah...maybe the long day today fried my brain, but how does that work?

my mother currently drives the pre. generation E, and my neighbor has a new one. no comment on either car as they both bore me

Adaptive cruise is on quite a few cars these days. It's either laser or sonar based and maintains a preset following distance and speed. If something gets too close in front of you it coasts and/or applies brakes to maintain a certain distance (which reduces with speed, so if you set it to follow at 120 feet at 70mph it'll follow much closer at 15).

Pretty common at this point, you can get it on your Ford or Hyundai, although most people don't get it due to the cost. I've yet to actually see it in action, but I could see it being really annoying. Say you're in the fast lane and someone pulls out going quite a bit slower far enough ahead that you'd normally just coast up while they got up to speed. Would the adaptive cruise hit the brakes? Abruptly?

It depends on your settings. Mercedes-Benz vehicles will actually stop the car, I believe, if it is severe enough. Same goes for Volvo. That would happen if someone pulled out and blocked your path completely.

However, it will usually slow the car moderately to maintain the distance and warn you about the need for more braking if needed.

If you set your distance for 500 ft, you'll have all kinds of problems. If you set it for 120 ft, you'll probably be okay.

^ The MB's will stop the car completely and you can adjust the range of how close you wish to follow the other car.

It only slows you down back to the predetermined range you selected and brakes moderately or hard depending on the situation, I didn't test to see if it would do an emergency stop. Once the car in front has moved or sped up, the car accelerates back to your cruise speed. I'm not certain, but I believe the MB system only works with the cruise control on, whereas the Volvo system is on all the time which could be rather annoying if you drive aggressively.

I can still remember a demonstration done by MB in Germany.

They filmed it inside an indoor parking lot and the cars crashed into each other.

It was a funny video.

Could someone look it up? I can't post anything here.

Exterior Styling:

E Class Coupe - Yes
E Class Sedan - not so much

I've seen both in person.

sat in one at the dealership, LOVE the new styling - though it's probably not for everyone (like the previous gen Accord when it came out in '03)
