If you get a manual with no options they can be had for around $22k, perhaps a little less if you want to haggle.

And before buying mine I thought about the MS3. Drove one and didn't really like it. The numbers are better, but to me it just felt/looked cheaper, didn't really feel any faster (but had horrible torque steer), just wasn't as fun to drive. Not to mention there are some reliability concerns (engine mounts breaking, broken rods with just a reflash...)

I like the new GTI's. I like them even more with the Alpil Body Kits seen below. But I would be worried about reliability issues. I have a number of friends with these cars, and not one of their cars have been 'Honda Reliable'.

Alpil Body Kit:

That has to be used. The base GTI starts over $22k. The cheapest I've seen an A5 GTI is $20k. In my area GTIs with a couple options are running low 20s, and maxed out examples are in the mid 20s.

I'm curious as to how that would affect the long-term reliability of these VW engines. I mean the tolerances have never been as high as Toyota/Toyota.

dont get me wrong the GTI is a nice car, but for me the ms3 outperforms it and still has a competitive enough interior.
I would MOSTLY agree with this statement but say...

The interior of the GTi is definetly better by quite a bit and the MS3 has HORRIBLE suspension. Very underdampened and bottoms out very easily. MS3 shines in the engine bay though... that car is quite a performed.

My friend has a MS3 and I have a GTi... I've driven his car on my daily commute about 5-6 times now and found it to be quite fun although the lack of top end power is really discouraging.

what kind of gas mileage do you get on your GTI? i heard with some reflashes people get 35+ mpg. i know it depends how you drive though.

On my normal commute which is only about half highway I average 27-29mpg. Highway averages are pretty easy to get 33+mpg.
