On my normal commute which is only about half highway I average 27-29mpg. Highway averages are pretty easy to get 33+mpg.
This is what I get with my older 1.8T GTI. I don't push the car much, ever. I haven't tried to see what kind of maximum mileage I can get by babying it, but on a full tank I can pull down about 400 miles a fill.

I really like those GTIs. They make for a really well equipped DD, and definitely sporty.

PS- drag racing on the street is incredibly gay.

MKV GTIs with light mods are definitely good cars. However I have shifted my way of thinking in that I don't think I need big HP in a DD any more.

My next car will probably be the new Impreza hatch. I hate the way they look, but are practical, and I'd get base - wouldn't even bother w/ the WRX or STI. Save some $, get 4wd and call it a day.

I currently drive an MKIV 1.8T GTI, it's very decent still - good enough power, decent enough handling, and good mileage for the performance it provides - too bad it's premium gas....

The interior of the GTi is definetly better by quite a bit...
I'm not feeling the plaid seats, though.

I totally agree. With gas prices high and rising, I was the best mpgs possible for my commute. What good is big HP do you when you stuck in traffic half the time?

wow! I never knew they got that type of mileage!! I honeslty thought they got around 20-22mpg. That's just another point that impresses me with that car. Obviously, I'm a fan.

I think it depends on how heavy your right foot is. I test drove one and was very close to buying one, but the lack of FWD traction with the amount of torque and short wheelbase the car has, I didn't think I could live with it. I'm interested in the MS3 also, but I have a feeling I'm going to have the same problem with that car also.

They're also not as heavy as some people will lead you to believe: a manual with no options is under 3100 pounds.
Truly sad that 3100 lb. is not considered terribly heavy for a modern Golf.

The original Rabbit weighed 1800 lb.!

The current Golf is a pig. Of course so is the MS3 and just about any current car you can name.

Like I said, truly sad...

Blame crash test standards and the American need to transport half your belongings in a car for the bloatedness.
