New GTI + simple mods = QUICK!
One of my best friends was looking for a fun, decently quick car in the mid $20k's and recently picked up a Fahrenheit GTI. The car was very nice stock- comfortable, good looking, great interior, and the engine pulled very nicely. He recently did some minor work to it (intake, exhaust, reflash), and it would now put my s2000 to shame. He is probably running very easy (and repeatable) 13.7's, which is pretty darn good for an extremely comfortable, well-priced, 4-seater fwd car! I think I might have to pick one of these up as a DD sometime. I had no idea how comfortable of a car it was, and how well it responded to simple mods!
Yes, I know that there are other cars that are even cheaper and respond even better to mods (Neon SRT-4 comes to mind), but none of them do it with even close to the same amount of composure, comfort, and practicality.

A guy I knew had the same mods on a newer GTI. He said he ran a 14 flat. We were dead even from any roll until I hit 4th gear. I would slowly walk on him once in 4th; and by walk I mean inch away from him. We raced 3 times - once from 10, and twice from 60. His car shouldn't put your S to shame. It's still a driver's race....

Wonderful cars. With just a reflash they put out 255hp and 305 lb/ft torque (at the crank, of course).
They're also not as heavy as some people will lead you to believe: a manual with no options is under 3100 pounds.

His car must be a ringer then. I am not into street racing, although I have done my fair share of autocrossing and track time, but I can tell you that I could not beat him from any speed in a straight line. The only races I would win would be from a dig, up to maybe 3rd gear. The weather is starting to break a bit here, so I think we are going to take his car to the strip soon, and I am almost certain that it will trap a few mph above a stock S.
EDIT: By different setup, I mean different brands of exhaust, header, etc..

My car looks stock. A GTI raced through traffic to get up on my rear. I took the ramp merging onto the highway and he tried to dart out early to block my merge. I wound it out and left him behind. It seemed faster than the stock numbers would suggest. For a few hundred, a chip for a turbo car is quite a bargain.
I wonder if he thought his car wasn't running right (that he couldn't pass a "stock" S2000).

MazdaSpeed 3 is better in every imaginable way except for a less cooler-looking steering wheel.
Try an intake, ecu reflash and exhaust on a MazdaSpeed 3.
For that matter any factory turbo car will respond well to mods, the GTI is no exception.

dont get me wrong the GTI is a nice car, but for me the ms3 outperforms it and still has a competitive enough interior.
