Chances are they are using Garrett/Allied Signal turbos. They have been making variable geometry turbos for a long time. I suspect the bugs in the turbo itself have long been worked out.

Sounds great if you have a six-horse trailer you need to move around.

Huh, never heard of variable geometry turbos. Pretty sweet. Any chance they've worked out enough bugs to allow them to spin to higher engine speeds or are they only available for slower big displacement engines?

Um, the engines aren't slower, they're just strapped to 7,000lbs of big truck.

Ford has a variable turbo as well, but the Duramax is a better motor than the new 6.0L Ford POS. My brother has an '03 Duramax and it's awesome. I can't imagine how nice this one feels.

I've got the 03 Duramax with the 5sp Allison automatic and it's great. Running 55 to 60mph I can get 20+ mpg's. At higher speeds it drops but still isn't bad. I thought I'd keep this truck for many years but the new one might make me trade.

BTW, from a 15mph rolling start my stock 2500HD diesel truck will pull slightly on my SVT Focus up to about 70 mph. These trucks aren't slow and the Allison tranny is as smooth as any I've ever driven.

I really like this too: "Another new feature of the Duramax 6600

I think you're confusing superchargers and turbocharges. SCs are belt driven so yes they need to be matched to the rotational speed of the engine. Turbos don't care how fast the engine spins - total airflow is all that matters. The article says these turbos spin at 120,000 rpm, for example.
