I'd say its more like a trading off between the two compaines at this point. Audi makes some great cars, and i would probably own one if i didnt have a bimmer.

4. The 2000-2001 S4 was never a step ahead of the e36 M3. It wasn't quite as quick and didnt handle NEARLY as well. I test drove an older model S4 and wasnt nearly as impressed with it as i was the M3. Plus i dont like small sedans all that much

3. all i meant by "catch up" is that bmw generally sets a new benchmark and then audi takes a couple of years to respond, and shortly after audi responds, bmw sets a new and higher benchmark. examples are the m3/s4 m5/rs6. i just feel that instead of just merely trying to match bmw, audi should try to take the initiative to raise the bars themselves. audi placed a foot in the right direction with the new S4 offering a torquey v8. unfortunately it still wasn't enough to dethrone the m3 in terms of performance.

4. i agree. the s4 to me was nowhere as enjoyable to toss around as an m3. nonetheless, some still felt that the s4 was a better all around performer (which does not include me.)

i agree with the other posts. this may be one of the best designs to date.
so.. this is what the next M4 will look like? (if they go with the 4 door = 3 series / 2 door = 4 series theory).

I do not like the redsign of the BMW series. The current generation is simple, classy, and possesses a distinguished BMW look. The new design is too drastic, Japan-esque and dorky. Why is BMW trying to keep up with the Joneses? (i.e. Acura, Lexus). They should focus on originality and simplicity. The trunk rear spoiler looks tacky and the interior does not compare to the Audis. Sitting in the '04 A8 was more luxurious than the '04 745i. At this point, I'd choose the S4 over the (potentially named) M4.
