Nissan got much right about the 370, but also cut too many corners making it a pretty poor platform for tracking. Decent car, but I'd never recommend one for anyone planning to hit the track or drive very aggressively in the twisties.
Why is that?
I think they were having some overheating issues with the early models. I don't know if this was worked out in the later models.

I'd have to agree that it is probably the best looking current car from Japan because Honda, Nissan, and Toyotas new designs are all atrocious.

I would say they are tied with Subaru.

I cannot see how Nissan can make a new Z car that is lighter, smaller, and also attract a "more mainstream" market. I imagine the discussion at Nissan headquarters is leaning towards a less powerful, cheaper, less focused car. I don't think that's a good path for the car, but might well be a good path for Nissan financially. Perhaps the idea is a car closer to a RWD economy car than a modern interpretation of the 300ZX. Again, I don't think that is a good path for the Z car, but I'm not paying the bills over at Nissan, so maybe that's what they need to do. It's never going to be a car that sets company-wide sales records, and it seems somebody at Nissan thinks it should, sadly.

370z is a bloated toad of a car. Lumpy, bumpy, downright dumpy looking. Swollen nose riding about 4-6" too high, fat, saggy rear, face looks like a constipated fish. Worst part is it's at least 500 lb. overweight. They don't need to take notes from the Z06 on weight, it is also 3300+ lb. Need to take notes on the FR-S/BRZ, S2000, FD RX-7, S13 240SX, and of course the 240Z. 2800 lb or less, Nissan. Not another 2-seat G.

Wait a minute. Acura deserves at least an honorable mention in this ugly contest.

I don't think Nissan designers are looking back to the 300Z. I think they are looking all the way back to the car's roots in the 240Z and 280Z. Which happens to be something I'd love to see. But I think you're right about that sort of car being able to attract a "more mainstream" buyer. Mainstream buyers generally want GT sporty cars with bells and whistles, not focused sports cars with few amenities.

I love my 370Z roadster. During my short 2 mile drive from dealership to home, I knew i could never go back to an S. I'm actually glad this car has a little weight to it. It cruises nicely. Lightweight, low and stiff is out for me. 10 minutes into the first ride with my wife she said "remind me again why the S2000 was so expensive" Now don't get me wrong, I loved the S... it was just time to move on.

As if the front bumper wasn't bad enough... Why did they design those hideous front headlamps?

The 370Z is virtually a supermodel compared to current Acura cars!

Why is that?
Brakes don't hold up to track abuse (supposedly the front end blocks off too much air)
Engine tends to overheat easily (and maybe diff/rear end?)
Car suffers from really bad fuel starvation - one track day org I attended advised anyone w/ a 370 to top their tanks after every session, saying that it could be catastrophic otherwise.
Engine lacks refinement, and works best w/ really expensive oil even though it doesn't have that high a specific output.
It's way overweight, despite having shrunk vs. the 350. How can such a small car be so heavy?

That said, I'd probably enjoy is as a purely street car.
