New 1.8t Jetta
How fast are these cars stock (with the 5 speed manual)? Also, with a new intake, chip, and exhaust, how fast are they? I know a guy who has those few mods done and he keeps saying how amazingly fast his car is. He says when he is on the highway and downshifts to 3rd, he spins the tires "for awhile" . How much power should he be making? I'm pretty sure these engines can respond fairly well to mods, but he seems to be exagerating quite a bit. Thanks for any info.

They have been rated in the 7's for the 150 hp version, about mid 6's for the 180 hp unit. They can be modded very easily though. I have seen kits for a few grand get them to an easy 240+. I don't know about spinning tires but then again even the biggest stock tires are 225's. Maybe he had bald tires. A big drawback is the 5 speed is pretty poor.

Was 150HP in both the A4 and the Golf/Jetta. Golf and Jetta were bumped to 180HP and the A4 to 170HP (go figure - I guess they didn't want to tread to close to the 3.0 220HP who knows).
Either way the new 1.8T can be chipped to 205HP ~ 215lb-ft of torque for about $500USD.
Edit what am I talking about that should read 205HP ~240lb-ft (lots of twist)
