Need an SUV

So, what did you end up getting?
I would've said a used Armada or even QX56. I'd rather have a Sequoia, but I don't think prices on the current generation have come down enough to meet your $20K range, and the previous gen were weaksauce.

Haven't picked one up yet. My dad wanted to get the Armada but I steered him away from that due to size and gas mileage.
Drove the Flex yesterday and they didn't like it too much so that's out of the question as well. We've got the Volvo left so lets see if they make a good deal.

Honestly, if you want a true 7-seater, then there aren't a lot of those. Sequoia, Armada, Suburban, etc. The back seats in smaller SUVs (MDX, probably Highlander, etc) are not particularly functional. They're fine for kids for short trips, but you can't take 7 adults on a road trip in them.

I've had two Pilots and have loved them. The newer Pilots can be gotten for a decent price, only one or two years on them for around $23k, nearly fully loaded. I sold my 08 Pilot with everything but 4WD on it for $23k and broke even. While the rear seat can be tight for 3 adults, it can be done and is fine for short trips (as someone else already mentioned).
Not sure about any others...my father in law has a CX-9 and while it's nice, I find the Pilot is bigger and better put together all around.
Good luck!

If you want mileage and some towing capacity, a Toyota Highlander Hybrid would be my choice. Tows up to 5000 lbs, capable of 30+ mpg, has an optional (tight) third row so it can seat seven, and you can buy one used in the low $20K range.
A Ford Flex actually has pretty poor fuel mileage, based on what I have READ. It's roughly comparable to any medium SUV out there (Pilot, etc, etc) since it's practically as heavy as all of them and only moderately more aerodynamic. So, better highway mileage but similar city mileage.

I have yet to check out a Pilot or Highlander. I've driven a Highlander and they aren't too bad. I didn't know the hybrids were that cheap though!
The explorer we have now has ''decent'' 3rd row and I fit snug back there for being 6ft. The Volvo's third row was smaller but the 2nd row seats slide forward quite a bit to provide rear leg room.
Thanks for the help guys!

A new Highlander Hybrid will run you some cash, for sure. Used is where you'd get them anywhere close to $20K.

Right off the bat, SUV and good gas mileage generally don't really jive to well..
I'd check out the CX-9.

I beg to differ. My Q7 averages 35mpg and I've had as high as 39mpg on a run to Wisconsin.

2. I don't know if I would call the Q7 a SUV, being based on the Audi Pikes Peak quattro concept car. Crossover maybe, SUV - not in my book.
