Depends if this is a must have car for you...

would an S4 be good enough instead?

I love my BMW's, but I will always stand by the M stands for marketing. Look at the 325i's and the E46 330 with performance packages, they are just a tick or if not the same in speed as the older E36 M3's.

Take for example the M5 5.0 V8 400hp, and the new V10 500hp. Since you are wanting an older one, (which IMO looks better) and still comes in a manual this might be a collector car to some.

You had a 540 before, so the interior will be pretty much the same. The only difference is the drive. Which is one of the best cars in the segment, but unless you don't want the S4 like I mentioned, and if this is the ONLY M5 priced right or in the area, I wouldn't get this one.

It sounds like it's been in the shop way too many times. I'd be worried about it.

Go to a BMW dealer and have them pull up the service report for you, it should tell you a great deal.

That CPO will basically be lasting you 8 months, not nearly long enough. Try to find one with a year or two on the CPO and get one with maintinance included.

Steve-

RUN, not walk, RUN away. 3 owners in that short period of time meant everyone was sick of servicing the thing, and that many services is NOT some guy that gets an oil change every month.

I made a couple of bad buys for myself, even after analyzing the carfax, and they had the exact same indicators (lots of recent services, constantly changing hands). Car turned out to be a major headache for me.
