Nothing to add from personal experience but I believe you have a friend there in Austin who owned an Xterra. She also has an S2000 and a Murano and a couple of big dogs. Ask her.

If you can wait another month or so, Consumer Reports will have it's annual auto issue that gives ratings on used SUV's reliability histories in different categories such as engine, cooling, fit and finish, etc. I feel reading Consumer Report's auto issue is a must for anyone considering a used car.

White cover with a black durango on it. It's been pretty helpful, but I'm not sure how much stake to hold in it.
For example, they rate the Jeep Grand Cherokee very poorly on reliability. We've had family firends that have had a GC for something like 8 years with no major problems. The guys on the Jeep board also claim good reliability, but I realize they're biased.

Do you need a truck? I personally have nothing against trucks. I was thinking about trucks and SUVs a while ago. I was also considering getting a wagon or hatchback as an alternative. Minivans should have been on my list but I just couldn
