As much as I hate to say it, friends and family would def. give me a lot of crap if I drove a miata (even if out of jest). It wouldn't matter how much I explain to them that the miata is actually a really awesome car, I would still be called a girly man. I'd rather be called a ricer in the s2k .

I'm actually trying to sign up for a PCA event tomorrow.
Does the Harris Hill event have instructors and stuff? Are they good/as good as PCA/TWS/DE events?
(BTW, I have no doubt you'd leave me behind, as I'm just now getting the S2k and looking into tracking)

Same here. I appreciate the execution, but I have zero interest in owning one.
I think this affects me too, even if it's sort of subliminal - it's funny, since I generally don't factor in other people's opinion of things I do, or own.

Miatas are great little cars. I put about ~100 track days on a 99 NB and never had an issue with it. Bullet Proof! The S2000 is a faster car but the Miata is more fun IMHO. It will be fun to compete in STR next year against NCs!

Harris Hill's instructors are great, and you'll find that most instructors work for multiple orgs in search of free track time.
They're trying to limit group sizes, and maximize run time (although it's a 1 day event, vs. full weekend) vs. others. I also think Harris Hill is a better track to start on due to lower speeds and no fixed objects to hit other than a few small flagging lights. TWS can be much more hazardous to your car and health if you go off track!

Mine should be putting down ~166-170 rwh, vs. ~200hp for an S. Factor in the weight savings, and it's not hard to see how I was able to tail an S down a straight at my local track, shortly before leaving it in the dust due to better braking/cornering. Everyday situations, when you need power, the Miata will get the jump every time unless you're screaming around in VTEC everywhere.
Also, I've never had a miata "jump" me at a stop light and I usually drive like I usually do shifting below 4k rpm.
28xxlbs/240lbs = 11.667 lb/hp
24xx/170lbs = 14.12 lb/hp
I know the gearing and tq curve has a lot to do with off the line acceleration but the difference in power to weight is just too drastic to make up for your claims.
I won't disagree that miatas are amazing cars but I'd never own one outside of a spec miata.

Where do you get those numbers? The 2.0L NC has 170HP at the crank. So the NC miata has <5% drivetrain loss?

2450 / 190 = 12.9 lb / hp as compared to 11.67 lb / hp for the S2000. So, a moderate difference but as he points out, shorter gearing and less weight, plus similar torque, make the Miata pretty close on the street for general driving. A wrung-out highway blast isn't going to be as close...

I love the s2000, and despite owning a boosted NA Miata, I would gladly upgrade to an s2000 if I could do so for free. lol.
However, I have zero doubt that the 2.0 in the Miata with some bolt ons would have better transient numbers than the s2000.
I like high rpms and I love the F20c and F22, but I have no misgivings about their performance at low rpms.
My boosted Miata makes 180 whp and 156 tq (iirc) and I can easily out accelerate s2000s. Granted, I am a good bit lighter than an NC, but never the less, I don't have any reason to doubt that Chris S's NC can hang with an s2000 in the straights. (please notice he never made a claim of blowing the doors off of an s2000 in the straights)
