Yes, pics don't do them justice - they're among the most gorgeous and well-crafted cars ever. They nail the little styling details like nobody else in the business IMO.
They are certainly gaining in popularity in TX. I've seen many in Houston recently and a couple new ones in Austin. There has always been a few in Dallas.

No offense, that's his old XKR. It's for sale. The newer XKs do look a bit like Astons (same designer, right?) but like you say, side by side they look a lot different.
