Loki,

Question. I heard that the SMG doesn't allow for a full "manual experience". I was told that even when in the the most agressive manual mode (S6), the system will shift for you, if you do not shift in time. ie: not letting you go fully to redline. If you can elaborate about this, it would be very useful. Thanks for the review.

all I can say is, even in S5 it's never shifted until I've told it too... I haven't bounced it off the limiter but I don't care to anytime soon.

In essence, sequential mode will only let you shift WHEN you tell it to, not sooner. As for downshifting, it will NOT downshift if you select a gear that will overrev the engine, nice insurance.

Glad you like your car I will be going the same way as I can find 10,000-20,000 to put down as I really want to buy this time unstead of lease. Maybe I should go put my name down now as i an thinking of picking one up in about 7-8 months.

Great review!

I can't wait to check your car out and get a ride.

I am moving this to Car Talk as I think it's a better fit there. If you object loki, let me know and I can move it back.

That and replacements for the stock Continentals (blech!) ....

Are youy talking about Continental "ContiSport2" tyres? In Europe and here it comes with "Michelin
Pilot Sport". Though, if the M3 comes with ContiSport2 tyres then I would hang on to them as that isarguably the best tyre you can get at the moment. If you have not heard much about it then just look at what Hamman fits onto their tuned BMWs. Also, look at what the Boxtser come with now and what RUF fits onto all their modified Porsches - ContiSports2.

Nice writeup Loki. I still want one, but am not ready to give up my S2000 yet...but it's likely to be my next car!

Krazik, are you going to Nasa's Sears Point event this weekend? I'm thinking about sunday...

as for the tires, they're Conti Sports, I don't think they're 2... more all season sport tires but I'll check when I go down. I wish I got the Pilots but I'll probably just order a set of S03's soon.

Loki,

I've never been super-hot on the E46M3, but seeing your car in red (I've driven smurf blue and seen the silvers) and reading the SMG-II review might just change my mind...
