Camry or Accord. The Sonata is a nice car but I don't know their reliability. Although they have the nice warranty, IMO it doesn't mean that they are reliable.

I'll probably get shot for this, but a Chevy/Caddy dealer I was at on Friday were sitting on quite a few Cadillac STS', they were knocking $20k off the sticker, which meant $22k for an STS V6, loaded except for Nav. which is a steal, IMO. It's not a performance car by any means, but for $22k it's a hard deal to pass on.
Half price on an STS, pretty much? I have a hard time believing that it's a 2008 and brand new. I mean, even Hummers aren't getting that kind of discount.

Personally, I'd go for a Camry Hybrid if he wants lots of room, good reliability, and strong resale. He'll pay full sticker for the car, I'm sure, but it should be roughly in his price range.

Otherwise, an Accord can be had at invoice (EX-L navi 4-cyl 5AT for under $23K + TTL) these days, so that's a fantastic deal on a nice car. Heck, add the V6 for another $1700 and he's still well under $30K for a car that should get more than 30 mpg on the highway. Great resale, too, when he decides to sell.

A Sonata will cost less up front but will be near worthless with 90K miles in three years.

Have him drive a new Accord. That will probably resolve his dilemna.

They were all base models, no V8's. They had taken $15k off due to discounts and rebates, but after I bought a truck from them, they spilled the beans on the STS' and said $20k off sticker on the V6 models. They had 3 RWD and 1 AWD (AWD was $29k)

If that's correct that's one hell of a deal. I drive an STS a few hundred miles a month. The V6 has plenty of power and the car drives very well. If these can be had new for under 30K it would be a great choice.

I forgot to mention that leather interior is a must so it would have to be a trim level in any model that has leather.

That Sonata interior is nice. Wow. I thought I saw an interior shot of the Azera once that was pretty impressive too.

He thinks sat radio is a must too but that is on just about every car these days.

He is really open to the Malibu although he thought the leather colors were ugly, I kind of like the adobe color myself, but he hates the the look of the Impala, although I think he is still picturing the older one with the fugly rear end.

Camry Hybrid he looked at and said he preferred the regular model because the batteries took up too much of the luggage space and the price differential was not warranted by the difference in milage from the regular four cylinder.

He used to drive an RX7 like a maniac. Once got a ticket for driving on a sidewalk around a construction backup, but what can I say, he is almost 70 now and says he only drives a 5 miles over the limit tops so I don't know that power is an issue except for he wants a car that can get out of its own way when merging on the freeway.

Anything I am missing from a Euro brand? I don't really follow Volvo, Saab etc.

The Euro offerings will be a bit costly once you add in leather and most don't have sat radio standard either. Saab is on the GM employee list, but the discounts aren't very substantial.

my vote is for the 4 banger accord...31 EPA mpg, good room, good interior, and fully loaded should mid in the mid 20k range.

A Hyundai is still, well a Hyundai. I mean no offense to anyone that owns them because they (I guess) are fairly nice for the price but I just don't trust them yet.
