I would prefer something like a Fusion over the econo cars.
Does Ford still make expensive parts if repair needed? I still remember 90s cars where CATS cost like $800 for replacement parts on a Taurus.

IMO, I rather stay with Honda/Toyota for his aunt, so she would not have to spend as much to maintain.
The history of the Fusion suggests it won't be an expensive car to own. You $800 cat sounds about standard for manifold integrated cats. My CA emissions 91 Camry cat cost $900 + labor to replace. The car was 8 years old at the time.

Living in the Bay Area, there are many FOB Asians (and yes, they drive really badly). And they will only buy Honda/Toyota (outside the Merc/BMW). As a result, it is easy to find junkyard parts dealers carrying parts for Honda/Toyota for the cheap. My local mechanic hates to work on anything other than Toyota/Honda for this very reason, in getting cheap parts for his customers.

Honestly, a Camry is probably perfect for her. Reliable, quiet, fuel efficient, easy to maintain and a dime a dozen.

What you describe is a regional effect and may not be true for the op. It also assumes that the Fusion, which has been lauded for reliability, would need that kind of service.
