My votes would go to the XK-E, the GT-40 and some of the old Lambos and Massers.

There are so many beautiful cars. How would you begin to chose the most beautiful?
427 Cobra
'63 split window 'Vette
'67 Corvette convertible
D Type Jaguar
Original (not the Miami Vice version) Ferrari Testa Rossa (yes, two words)
Ferrari Daytona Spyder
Lamborghini Miura S/V
The only real SL - the Gullwing
the last aircooled (sorry don't know the year but I'm guessing it was 1999 or 2000) 993 Turbo
M1 Miata - Call me crazy and its clear that it was seriviative of several much earlier British sports cars (not the least of which was the Lotus Elan) but the original Miata was just a work of art, IMO.
BMW Z8
I could go on and on...

Da Hapa 98 was the last year for the 993.

I can't think of any cars that can compare, i mean there ARE other cars out there that look as good if not better(carrera gt, vipers, etc etc), but staying under the limitations the original poster first placed, i would say the s2k.

There have been many fine cars mentioned but I'm sure there are more. I agree with the Aston Martin, but it's a little bit rich, as are the Ferrari's and Lambos and etc.
I was thinking more along the lines of the Mercedes gull wing that Da Hapa mentioned, or maybe the A.C. Cobra. I'm partial to the old British sports cars and I favor the AH 3000, MGA, MG-TD or maybe the circa 1960 Morgans and TVR. In my eyes there is something special about those cars.
Anyway, keep the choices coming!
By the way, does anyone agree with me that the 1954-1955 Corvette was the most beautiful Corvette ever made?
