I (somewhat) understand the popularity of SUVs here in Buffalo. There isn't a lot of choice if you want a minivan with 4/AWD, but many choices for SUVs.
If it came down to the choice between minivan or SUV, I'd pick the minivan IF I had the option of 4WD for the winter driving.

Sorry, I can't bring myself to the thought of driving a minivan

Mini-van as long as its an Odyssey. Got to drive one recently and it was a really nice ride. I would totally rock one if I had a family. Ingress and egress is way better for family hauling...has just as much space if not more. Its safer, better ride, and more economical. An SUV just doesn't make sense at all unless you are constantly trailering something.

Owned a Chrysler T&C, Yukon Denali, Chrysler Pacifica, Volvo XC90, Mercedes R500.
No doubt about it the lowly Minivan embarrassed the SUV's, Crossovers, and Wagons for all around "utility" that people actually use. If you need to haul a family and all the stuff associated with home ownership, it's no contest. And minivans can be outfitted with every luxury known to man. I'd own one again, no problem. They're not fun but very...well...utilitarian!
The one area that the Denali really out performed everything else was towing. It actually rode very well for a truck. But space utilization was laughable. Four captains chairs in a vehicle that weighed 5,600 lbs. We needed a Thule box on the roof for vacations.
As for off road capability.....not a chance! Most SUV's like the ones I named above are way too big and heavy to take off road. A cheapo Wrangler will embarass a Hummer on a trail.

Would definitely drive and own a minivan if I need to. The driving dynamics are overall good and the utility is awesome.
A lot of the time I feel like I can get away with driving over the speed limit because its not a cop magnet. Works all the time!
Plus why should I care if people see me driving one?
