Really? The driver got hit head on and walked away, seems like better than I would have expected.
Imagine if he had caught something more massive to the face. It might not have been so pretty.
Personally, I would chalk it up to a one in-a-million chance, but I'm just saying...

Keep a couple of things in mind before drawing conclusions about the safety of street Loti based on this accident.
Firstly, this was a race car, which means it had a sturdy roll cage (roll *cage*, not roll bar), a race seat, and multipoint harnesses. The driver was wearing a helmet and a fire suit (although neither likely made a difference here) and probably a head-and-neck restraint as well.
Secondly, you can see from the video and the pictures of the aftermath that the Miata launched off of the Elise as if it were a ramp. This likely contributed to the Elise driver emerging essentially unscathed, as the force of the impact was redirected instead of all going straight into the Elise.
CosmosMpower, the race weight for a Spec Miata is between 2285 lbs. and 2450 lbs. including driver and gas, depending on the year of the car. Race weight of a T2 Elise is 2090 lbs., again including driver and gas.

Right, like you guys would pass up the opportunity to run around the track Ricky Bobby style screaming "Save me Tom Cruise!"
But not to be confused with Tom Kruse, the inventor of the Hoveround. That man is not nearly as powerful. So be sure to scream: "Save me, Tom Cruise!" and not "Save me, Tom Kruse!"

I saw the aftermath of a fatal Elise collision in Austin, and it looked far worse than any other small car I've seen. The chassis is glued together, and when it fails, it can do so catastrophically. W/ most other small cars, you at least have a welded steel structure and an engine ahead of you.

Tom Cruise is a very powerful man in Hollywood. I'm sure he can certainly save us when comes a time.
