What would happen if you have a hardtop? will it help or just collapse over you and make things even worse?

So if that happened in the S2000, the those metal roll bars behind the seats would stop the car from crushing us?

Well, several Miata owners have survived roll overs. The front frame may, or may not collapse, it kind of depends on the circumstances. If one builds a windshield frame which is strong enough to support the weight of the car, it still won't help when the car comes smashing down as the G forces involved will multiply the weight of the car many times.
Also, the chances of a roll over in a convertible like the Miata with a low center of gravity, are not that high. Of course, that's no good when you DO end up in a roll over, but unless you're a crazy driver who really does go all out on their car, chances of it happening are low.
Anyway, the harddog bar will protect your head from something like this, but have been known to cause other damage if hit from behind. i.e. your head will whiplash into the bar causing a concussion. So if you do want to protect your skulls, it's time to pad the bar as well.
I personally wouldn't bother... the chances of being in a roll over are so very small. I guess I'd just give it the shadow of a doubt. I just happen to be like that *shrug*

Best mod I ever did on mine, even if it interfered with the shoulder belts and made fitting a tonneau a nightmare. I had the Hard Core Double Diagonal, powder coated tan to match the interior, and if nothing else the Miata lost its "girlie car look" immediately.
