The MCS was already a great car. Then in 2005 Mini upgraderd the instumentation, added LSD, and has Paddle shifters. Way cool and great handling. A go kart is the best way to describe it.

Yeah, that comment about the girl thingy...that kind of worried me at first, but after seeing some pictures of tastefully modded MCS, I'm starting to sway that way. My biggest gripe about the MCS are the chrome parts, but thats easily taken care off. The other big problem for me is all the shiny plastic parts on the interior...but, oh well.

go with the cooper s with the works.. although the new 2.0t is a hoot to drive..for the price of a mcs and works you could get an a3 2.0t with a 6 spd and from what i can tell with my limited seat time, they are very ncie cars, so check them out if its your cup of tea

If you can't wait for the new GTI, how about that new Audi A3 with only sport suspension option. The 2.0T is getting good reviews so far. The quattro 6 cylinder doesn't come out for another year.
I believe the next Mini will get rid of the Chysler motors, but I don't know when.

If you won't buy a car that's fun to drive because you think it's "girly," then you've got some real identity issues, IMO.
Oh, and to the thread starter, go with the MCS. Though what about the A3? I haven't really looked into the performance specs of it, but it looks like a good package.

Someone's insecure with the girl car comment.
Anyways, here's mine... great car, superb handling, well built and packed full of luxury features.
I suggest getting an '05 model with LSD, alot of improvements made over the previous model years. To avoid the plasticy interior, go with the anthracite trim, anthracite headliner and the chromeline trim.
