I'm confused how you can trade the car in early or sell it for more than you owe on it. I mean if you trade it in won't you still own something? Also if you buy it (early) and sell it private how can you be sure you will make out? How much would it cost to buy it and what can you sell it for? It seems like a lot of work to get out of a lease.

I'm not up on leases, can you explain?


As far as the GTi it's nice (very nice) I was thinking of buying one, but I just came out of a 99 Passat. That car was nice, but it was a money bucket after the warranty was up. Maybe if you plan on constantly trading cars so they always have a warranty, otherwise I'd think twice about the VW.

I think the Legacy GT is a nice car thats as nice as the GTi in different ways. It's AWD is a nice feature and can be tuned just as easy as the GTi. I don't care for high HP FWD cars. The GTI at 200hp in nice I don't know if I'd want to fight much more power from a FWD.

I am a little sad, I had been waiting for months to read your review of the BRP kit. But it looks as if it is still in the works.

Another vote for Subie. I bought an Outback turbo, which is fun but it was an expensive second car. You can find used models as old as 05 in the low 20's with a stick and they come with lots of goodies. The nice thing is I traded an 02 dodge Stratus for a turbo car with 250 hp, added comprehensive coverage and my insurance went down. Even though the car has scoot, since it is a wagon and gets some of the highest safety ratings out there, insurance was dirt cheap. I pay ~$280 for six months, full coverage, $100 deducts. Insurance is more expensive in Jersey though due to high theft rates though. Oh, that was State Farm by the way.

The $700 insurance quote was actually not in New Jersey. It was for North Dakota, before I moved, so it'd be even worse here. I haven't switched my insurance over yet because I'm living in Long Island temporarily until we close on a house, but I'm currently paying about $2,000 a year for an '04 S2000 and an '05 MDX. $1,500 of which is for the S2000. I was quoted about $700 additional for an '03 WRX wagon and $800 for a sedan (but not in NJ). I'm insured through USAA, whome which I'm planning on staying with.

The only way I'd buy a Subaru is if I kept the S2000. I just think they're fugly as heck and wouldn't want one as a one and only car. I'll have to go test drive a GTI and see how it drives. I know it's not going to be anything like the S2000. Again, what is there in the S2000's price range that provides the same performance? Not much. Not much into Beemers and paying for every little option because it's BMW. Oh well. I've got time to think about it. The way it looks, I could probably sell the S for at least $3,000 more than buyout and pocket some cash. It should be worth more than $17,500 with 40k miles next year.

$1500 sounds like a lot for the S2000. I have to store mine during the winter, so State Farm lets me call it the second car instead of the primary. I pay $600 a year for the Subaru, and about $400 a year for the S2000. The only catch is I have to limit miles on the S to 7500 a year. And since It is a partial year thing and I only drive it on days with no chance of rain in the summer, it is not a problem.

Considering you're in jersey, I would think 4wd drive is a must.
If i was in your position, I would look at the MazdaSpeed 6.

looks great, good power, handling, heard they have a great deal going on them aswell.

$400 a year for an S2000, huh? You're a lucky man. Your car is also 3 years older than mine, but I find it hard to believe a car with an insurance code of 24 (out of 27) could be $400 a year, even only driving it 7,500 miles. At least that's the code USAA gave my S. What kind of coverage and deductables do you have? I've got $100,000/300,000 bodily injury and uninsured motorist bodily injury, $50,000 property damage, $30,000 personal injury protection, with $250 comprehensive and $500 collision deductables. This is based off 8,000 miles per year.
