A lot of cars are competition for other cars these days, in part because so many are so inherently capable. The new M3 puts up numbers that compete with many cars above its price point, so technically it would be GT-R competition, in somewhat the same vein the Z06 technically competes with the CGT purely by the numbers.
It's just about gotten to a point where no matter how much you spend, you're not going to get something that's significantly better than other cars, regardless of price, unless you factor in track prowess and interior quality. On features, power, and drivetrain layout, there's so much out there with 6-12 cylinders that performs in the same general envelope as to make someone's choice based less on direct performance than other factors.
