Well, we only tried one BMW dealership so far. We couldn't chip them down for any test drives. The sales guy was just cold about it, saying people who buy the M3 know exactly what they want and need no test drives. So to you guys who are sales guys, that really makes you lose a customer, cuz my friend won't return there if it turns out he's gonna buy one, good deal or not. Anyways, enough about that. We'll just find a used dealership so he can push the car some.
Thanx for the reviews above. It's being considered now. My friend's the type of person who buys a car and has it til the day it runs into the ground, hehe. So this car will be fully daily and track car every now and then. What you guys say is that the M3 is like the S2000, in that if you want to mod it, you have to go all the way with forced induction to get anything significant out of it? He likes the fact that there are rear seats, so any roadster is out of the question. He did consider the new Z06, but that's just too pricey--definitely wants a new car. When is the V8 M3 supposed to come out and at what premium? That's new to me.

The M3 is rated 16/24 or 16/23 (less highway mpg for the smg) combined you're at 20mpg. Top it off you have to pay $1K gas guzzler tax on the M3.
S2000 epa mileage is 20/25 combined you're at 22.5 mpg.
The M3 makes more hp and is heavier than the S2000, has a much worse city epa rating and you're paying $1K for gas guzzler tax.
I'll go so far as to say there's no way in hell the M3 gets better mileage than the S2000.
I calculate by filling up at the station and noting how much fuel is put into the car. I get the mileage since fill up and divide it by the gallon. With the S2000, I get around 20 while with the M3 I get around 22.
Just for an example, the previous generation Corvette Z06 makes 405HP, weighs more, has an additional 2-4 cylinders, and makes 28MPG on the highway.
How about we roll together to the Dragon in the fall and fill up at the same time..

There are no prices set for the E90 M3 and no dates set. In my opinion, it's still over 2 years away but supposedly it's going to put out over 400HP.
