Lotus Elise - Safe?
#31
I don't care how safe they are, if I could afford one I'd get one.
As far as accidents go, accident avoidance is one part of safety that can not be measured. I can think of a few instances where power, handling or braking have kept me out of dangerous situations that the aforementioned F-150 would have been towed away from. Think of any panic stop situation on the freeway, I'd rather be in an Elise. The S2000's excellent brakes saved me from a concrete barrier falling off a truck at a construction site this summer.

For this reason. I don't care how good an Elise does on a government crash test. Because the crash test score is a farce. It's not fair to subject a 6000 lb truck to a 6000 lb crash force while subjecting a 1800 lb car to 1800 lb crash force and try to say the car with the better score it's safer. That's just nonsense. Crash an Elise into a F150 and tell me which one is safer.
Whats going to kill you in a Elise is if you hit a larger truck like mine your simply going to go under the back of the truck and hit the frame rails and the rear support and the trailer hitch right about the hood line, or in the front your going to end up with my motor over your head.
If I hit one from the side at say 40mph it would simply go under the truck in my opinion or get pushed sidways real fast, That box frame might protect you front the side hits that it can deflect but any 3/4 sized truck or above will simply desimate a Elise as whats going to hit you is above the box.
you got to get hit first, I used to drive around in my 56 356 and that thing was a death trap, could not get out if its own way 90% of the time.

• Energy absorbing front composite ‘crash structure’.
• Energy absorbing rear steel ‘crash structure’.
• Side sill foam pads.
• A seat belt mounting frame incorporating a roof hoop
• Extruded aluminium door beams.
• A collapsible steering column.
• Airbags for both driver and passenger.
Active safety features include:
• Lap and diagonal inertia reel seat belts with impact sensing pre-tensioners.
• Powerful anti-lock four wheel disc brakes.
• High geared responsive steering requiring only small steering wheel movements to alter course
• Exceptional road holding with optimised handling characteristics
