Default Looks like RX8 hp rating is getting revised down

I guess Mazda repeated the whole Miata hp thing once again.

Basically, they are going to revise the HP rating to 238hp because of the average they got from dynoing 11 cars. And they say that it is within the 5% margin of error now. Although I still believe that it is on the high side of the 5%, since if you knock another 5% of the rating, it more closely matches what people are finding on the dynos. And letters are supposed to go out next week to owners to give them the option of Mazda buying the car back or you get free maintenance during the warrnty period and $500 debit card. So it's pretty much the same deal that the offered with the Miata fiasco.

And the info originally came from an inventory manager who just got out of a conference call with Mazda, and then someone else just confirmed that he heard it from the dealer too.

Unbelievable. Really makes me wonder about the engineering of the motor if they can't even get an accurate horsepower reading before releasing it to the public.

here....

1. Just got a call from my dealer. Official Mazda word is 239 HP. Current owners and those who take delivery by Tuesday will get a $500 credit and free scheduled maintenance for the warranty period ("approx value $1260").

2.This just in:

Just got a phone call from budaman, who had just got off a conference call with MNAO. Apparently they are revising the RX-8 horsepower figures: the Manual is being revised down 3.6% to 238hp, and the Auto down 4.5% to 197hp.

Anyone who has already purchased an RX-8 will be receiving a letter from Mazda offering two alternatives:

Mazda will buy back the car. (He didn't have the full details - they'll be in the letter.)

Mazda will provide free scheduled servicing for the duration of the standard warranty plus a $500 debit card.

Basically the same deal that they offered after the 2001 Miata was found to be down on power too. Owners will have 30 days to decide.

Personally, I'm amazed that they repeated such a basic blunder, but I know which of the options I'll be taking (and it ain't "return the car" ).

Glad to see they're stepping up, if this all proves to be true.

How hard is it to publish accurate HP figures, anyway? Good grief.

to Mazda for their solution, however.

238hp still sounds kinda high to me. Didn't three owners find their RX-8s generating around 178hp at the wheels? Does 25% sound like typical drivetrain loss with a manual transmission? The S2000 is around 17% I believe...
