Yeah some have said they have been really reliable. I feel like the powertrain wouldn't be a problem (even though some of the Audi's I have read burn 1-2 quarts of oil every 1k miles which is considered normal by Audi) just the annoying electrical and sensors etc going out.
If I went with a german car I would probably get a 335xi sedan. I have seen lots for around 25 grand used.

Imo people that drives cars like Audis and BMWs are more inclined to complain when little things go wrong. These cars also have more hings in them that can malfunction. Anecdotal, but people I know with Porsches, Audis and such from the past 10 years generally don't have issues.

Yeah that's very possible. Is it possible to do your own maintenance on the german cars? Or do they make them near impossible to do stuff like fluid changes etc. I thought I remember how they make a lot of stuff like that very hard to do without specialty equipment.
Hopefully that is just hearsay.
The 335xi sedan would be perfect with AWD and plenty of power with a nice interior and ride quality etc. I have driven the 335i coupoe a bunch of times and has a very nice smooth powerband.

Understood. I had a brain fart and forgot you needed something other than RWD.
Ok, now I'll toss out a non-car that I've enjoyed driving. Porsche Cayenne 6sp. A search on autotrader turned up some fairly low mile units at the upper end of your price range.

Volvo S60R.
300hp/300tq turbo5cyl. AWD. Electronically adjusting suspension. Brembo brakes. Very very comfortable interior. Volvo safety and built like a tank.
I've seen ones with 60k miles go for $15k.
Not sure about the GPS for a 5 year old car though. It is big and heavy, so it won't feel as nimble as some of the other cars you mentioned, but it's worth a look.

I have thought of that but I would want the V6 model in manual trans but I don't think they offered that unfortunately. The 4 cyl is just too lower powered for me.
I'll have to look into those. I do like how some of those Volvo's look!
Right, because taxis, cop cars and plow trucks are all AWD :/
Summer tires on an Audi would be idiocy on snow and ice. Good all season or snow tires on RWD is fine.
Whatever car I would put dedicated snow tires on the car for the winter. Even though some RWD cars can be decent in the winter, a fwd or awd car with snow tires will be much better imo.
yeah I might have to travel quite some distance to find a nice TL Type S in manual it seems. Within 500 miles of me the only ones I have found either had an accident or 75K+ miles on them.

G8s are great, but rwd for a winter car is not. No Audis on the list?
