i recently updated my daily drivers:
1) 99 tacoma trd 4x4 xcab, 120Kmi $8K
the taco is a solid truck, tho the suspension was way too soft, all this fixed now. i might also add from my refernce the truck is hard to work on, for example the oil filter is so hidden.
2) 92 honda civic vx 140Kmi $2.25K, i ordered about $500 in tune up stuff, timing belt, water pump, wires, distrubuter, plugs, all filters, o2 sensor, belts. i am looking for a set of oem rims for it.
i like the style of the civic vx and its great on gas w/o all the hybrid junk.

I'm looking into buying a beater civic as well and I can't seem to find the exact one I want. I also could not find much info on options these civics came with.
I would like a 1993 civic hatch, manual with power windows, white ext in a working condition. I'd also like the price to be around 2k to 2.5k. Is tihs an impossible search?
Also, none of the 93 civic hatches I've found so far have their models written(si, vx, cx)
What should I do? I really want to find the perfect beater in the near future.

If you are considering a Tacoma, I would strongly suggest you also look at Rangers. I found that used Rangers seemed to be better values. Basically when I was looking it was a 7 year old Toyota with 110,000 miles or a 4-5 year old Ranger with 60,000 miles for the same money. According to CR the Ranger is almost as reliable for any given year as the Tacoma (both above average to excellent). When you factor the extra age and mileage of the similar priced Toyota, the Ford was the clear reliability leader (it should be, I'm comparing a newer Ford to and older Toyota). Additionally, the Ranger drove better in my opinion. The Toyota had better feeling controls but the Ford drove nicer (better handling... lets not kid ourselves both sucked). Were it not for the gas I would far prefer an F-105 over either truck.
In the end, I still say a SAAB 900/93 is a great beater when you combine what you get for what you pay it's hard to beat!

I recently purchased a 95 Integra LS 4 door with a 5 speed and am very happy with it. It is very comfortable and sportier than an Accord or a Camry. It is my bad weather vehicle and classified as primary car for insurance purposes. It has 80K miles and gives 26-27 miles/gallon in city driving. Have not taken it long distance yet. I was looking for a 4 dr GSR but could not find one. This is well within your budget, maybe half of it should suffice and because it is an Acura you would get ABS, alarm, moon-roof standard for this model.

Is it that much of a hassle to drive around in a car without pw or pl?
I should just go for the coupe or sedan version, because they came with pw, pl and are also cheaper.
For some reason ppl seem to love the hatch. :/

I have an Accord wagon for daily usage. I love it. They quit making them in 97 though. It's WONDERFUL for groceries. Plenty of cargo space. Gets about 28-31 mpg. I have a 93.
The late 90s TLs are quite nice. Not sure about mpg.
But as everyone else said: A Honda or Toyota.
