So why would someone choose this over say the more powerful and better performing WRX STI hatch for the same price, or the regular WRX hatch for $8500 less?

WRX & STI are hideous and have super econobox interiors. Golf R is... not beautiful, but not ugly on the outside. Great interior.

I don't know. Maybe it's just me, but I think I could learn to like the exterior and interior styling of the WRX if it saved me $8500.

No one will ever say the R will be better than an EVO or STI, but having driven the current STI and seing that godforesaken interior (ok it aint that bad, but subie guys should neeeeever criticise modern domestics' interiors), I could understand the appeal of the R. Percentage wise for most of us, your car will be just that, a car, that you use to drive here and there, be seen in it, etc etc. And that's where the R excels, much better interior, styling the appeals to a certain group, etc. For some, the big wing and hardcore performance of the evo and sti just becomes too much, some people actually want a more subtle approach. The original r32 in admist the competition did fairly well, and people still hold it with high regard.
I mean yeah, people say they dont care what others think or whatever else, but driving an STI to a valet when you're 18 vs. 30 has a big difference, I mean just look at pics of you when you were in high school.

Base price of $34K? I'd rather have an EVO - excellent AWD system, good steering feel, good utility, etc. I looked at the interior pics and must say nothing looks that spectacular; the steering wheel is kinda nice, but everything else is just okay.

P.S. Wings can easily be removed or replaced with smaller ones. That's the first thing I'd do to an EVO - a much more subtle wing/spoiler.

For that kind of scratch, I would be going with a slightly used 335xi.
