Porsche is the drivers car. Period. End of sentence.
And Ferraris are not?

Yeah, I feel quite indignant myself when I read non-S2000 topics in this forum called "Car Talk - Discussions and comparisons of cars of all makes and models." </sarcasm>

Anyway, I wonder what year Gallardo the OP's friend drove, and what sort of condition it was in. Most reviews are quite free with their praise of the car. For example, Gary Thomason (eight time SCCA autocross champion) said this of the LP560-4 in the autocross section of an R&T shootout - "It does whatever you want, whenever you want it to. Plenty of grip, the gearbox works flawlessly out on the track

Gawdy or not, the LP560 is freaking gorgeous and sounds way better than the Scud.

They may not be lightweight race cars for the street, but they definitely perform at a high level.

I saw this picture and it made me think of this thread. Yes, these aren't street cars, but it's a damn cool picture.

Here's an interesting comparison on a tight course....

I think it is silly to say that the are all show. They gallardo has a pretty advanced aluminum space frame that serves no purpose other than to be rigid and light which are hardly requirements for poser mobiles.

They come with performance minded suspension, drive train, etc.

Sure, they are a bit gaudy and over the top, but they are certainly high performance cars.

The one thing I will say is that they are not nearly refined as a ferrari. I think this speaks to the level of understanding and technology available to the manufacturer. Ferrari undoubtedly knows more about building high performance cars and you usually get more performance with a comparable ferrari.

The Gallardo is a pretty strong driver's car. It's a different experience than the 430, but few would call it "all show".

The Murcielago has a lot of power but is a lot of show. Still 580 hp i'd say is not no go, yet it is not a 'driver's car' . That being said, it's more of an 'event' to drive a Murcie than a daily humdrum.

I'm about to buy a Murcie. To me there is no other car short of a million dollars that give's a unique experience of a Murcie. The lambo doors, the wideness and the lowness.

What is is that your friend want's out of the car he's buying?

Is he canyon cruising, is he tracking the car, or does he want people to check him out?

Your statement about performance doesn't hold true for the Gallardo vs. F430 comparison. The LP560-4 easily outperforms the F430. The LP560-4 is even quicker in a straight line than the F430 Scuderia. The upcoming LP550-2 should outperform the Scuderia by an even greater margin.
