I have a buddy that had a 996 TT X50 (street tires) and a spec Miata (race tires). The lap times for the two were pretty close and the maintenance on the Miata is a little cheaper.

I've seen a Spec Miata keep up with a Z06 in a 2.9 HP track(TWS). Its ALL in the driver.
Also if you want a HP edge. Get a Flying miata- a friend of mine picked one up for less than $11k. put in $3k and he has a rollbar, gutted interior, harness, kirkey seat- and the car puts down 200 hp easy. The only problem being there is no series for turbo miata's.
