[QUOTE=Vitt,Oct 27 2006, 09:46 PM] Perhaps it matters on a track (assuming equal capability drivers), but I still don't think it tops the overall driving experience, refinement, and reliability of the SI.

what about the mazdaspeed3? it's within the price range of the Si iirc. the ms3 has very good performance for a fwd, not to mention awesome interior and 5 doors of practicality.

Check out this month's C&D, not only was the Cobalt fully SIX seconds faster around VIR than the Si it was a couple of tenths quicker than the Mustang GT. It's a fast, good handling, well sorted car.

There no doubt the Si is better built and will hold its value better, but the there also no doubt that the Si is the slow man of the group.

The car to buy in the hot compact segment is the MS3, hands down.

The Cobalt is a surprisingly decent car for the money. It's got no bling and will probably depreciate like crazy, which makes it the perfect winter beater a couple years from now.

Have you actually driven one? After checking one out in person, I was pretty surprised by how nice the SC version is.
No, I haven't driven one, but I don't think my opinion would change after I drove them back to back. For street driving, I think the SI is the better package, period. I hope that GM is getting it's act together and it's starting to show on their cars like the Cobalt. Even though GM extended their warranty, it seems that they lack trust in their products by making the powertrain warranty 100K/5 yrs instead of the usual 100K/10 yrs.

Here is one review from Autoweek when the SI was first introduced:

The Cobalt is a nice lil car and handles pretty well. As some one said before, it would be the perfect car to buy used as a fun beater.

Admittedly, I haven't driven the Si, so i cant speak on which is better.

Until you've driven an SI, you won't know what it's like. Much like the S2K, but looking at the performance #'s, it's not that impressive, but the drive experience and other things that make them stand out against other cars.

Aside from the interior I really like the Cobalt SS, not that the interior is that bad... just not on par with honda/vw/mazda. At any rate, the hands down performance winners in the segment are the SRT4 and Cobalt SS depending on whether your speaking of straightline acceleration or handling. The Si does give you a whole lot more creature comforts tho, but then there's the GTi.

Rag racing is just as pointless as bench racing. The outgoing Si got a lot of love from the press and it was mediocre. It's a competitive enough market segment that I can confidently say the Si isn't going to walk away from the competition. It's not like the s2k where the closest things are the miata, boxster, solstice, and SLK.
