No longer true, my friend. I was surprised at how good the fit and finish is on the new Wranglers. Inside and out. Of course it"s still a Jeep and doesn't pretend to be anything else. Also, the NV3550 5 speed tranny is a big improvement over the AX 15s. it shifts nice and they have been reliable and strong. A little noisy in neutral, but a good tranny!

I have never owned one, but have ridden in quite a few, and I know for a fact that Consumer's Reports has never given a good review of them. Reliability-wise they are below average however, the cars are amazingly easy to work on--for a DIY'er (so I've read in numerous articles over the past years). But the main thing I've read about them is that they suck driving on the roads--are meant for offroading. And I can see why--everytime I ride in one, it is pure torture on the road. I mean, if you think your butt hurts after riding in a S, you are in for some pain. But if you want something for fun offroading, I'd say get one. Especially if you have some car knowledge.

The 4 Litres's fuel economy is downright disgraceful. My neighbors 93' Cherokee with the 4L six pukes oil all day long. He has a 10x10 FT slick in front of his home. It is not allowed on the driveway. He is looking to do a smallblock Chevy conversion soon.

I've had good luck with the 4.0L 6's and Jeep 4wd drivelines over the last 15 years - though they were Cherokee's and Commanches - not Wranglers. My 88 and 94 both ran 145K miles with absolutely no problems. Both got 25mpg when they were new & before we got stuck with ethanol laced fuel up here in MN. Now the 94 has 145K miles on it, still gets over 20mpg & is on it original clutch. Engine, transmission and running gear have never been apart. It was in the shop once for a tuneup. It doesn't leak or burn oil - at all. I don't even check it between oil changes. I've done brakes, hoses, belts, water pump, radiator - all of which I consider routine maintenance on high mileage cars.

I would have no hesitation whatsoever in buying another 4.0L 4wd Jeep. If the Liberty had the 4.0L 6 I'd buy one of those. It doesn't, so I won't.

Thanks for all the input guys... I may be spending more time in Minnesota if things work out alright for me... hence my desire for 4wd (i refuse to use the stook as a snow plow! like some of the crazy canadians here)
